Governor Phil Bredesen joined TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely and state and local leaders today to announce that the state will provide the town of Linden with an enhancement grant of $604,184 to assist with the development of Phase II of the Linden Downtown Improvement Project.
The project is located in downtown Linden, along East and West Main Street from Mill Street, and is part of a multi-phase enhancement to the downtown district. The improvements are designed to improve the character of the downtown area while creating a more pedestrian oriented environment.
"Downtown enhancement projects like this one can serve as a catalyst for other investments and private sector improvements that can change the face of the entire area," said Governor Bredesen. "I’m pleased the state can help move this important project into the next phase."
Senator Roy Herron added, "When complete, this project will further Linden’s efforts to create a downtown that encourages visitors to park, walk, and shop. I thank Governor Bredesen and TDOT for providing these funds."
"This is such an important investment for the town of Linden and for Perry County," said Representative John Tidwell. "I fully support efforts to revitalize this area and promote economic growth."
The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
"Through the Transportation Enhancement Grant Program, TDOT has helped fund approximately $205 million in transportation related projects," said Nicely. "The program was established by Congress in the early 1990’s to fund activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system."
A variety of activities such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects are eligible for grant funds under the federal program.
The project includes the replacement of sidewalks, landscaping, and decorative street lighting. Once completed, it will connect the City Hall and Welcome Center on the east side of Linden to the downtown
